Early October, at the 2026 Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction taking place in Vaasa, the EPFL+ECAL Center has presented a newly published paper on Miso, an AI-powered conversational agent designed to help people make healthier and more sustainable dietary choices. This project was developed as part of the Horizon Europe project SWITCH.

The complexity of existing dietary information limits transitions towards healthier and more sustainable diets. The human-computer interaction approaches that look to augment food literacy and which engage LLM-powered conversational agents hold promise in addressing this challenge. Combining these strategies, the epfl+ecal center designed a conversational agent that shares principles of healthy and sustainable eating through a structured five-day interaction integrating self-reflection, proactive guidance and microlearning.

This study provides empirical evidence into the potential of conversational agents in promoting food literacy around healthy and sustainable eating as well as design knowledge into the role of self-reflection, proactivity and microlearning in this context.

During the conference in Finland, Emily Groves has outlined the key topics of this paper entitled “Reflection, proactive guidance and microlearning: Evaluation of a conversational agent for food literacy”.
