Exploring the potential of emerging technologies through design, the EPFL+ECAL Lab is a design research and innovation centre of the EPFL/Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, located in the building of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. It tackles the challenges linked to new technologies by combining artistic creativity, and scientific knowledge in order to transform technical performance into user experience.

With its expertise in design, engineering, architecture and psychology, it creates disruptive concepts and turns them into functional prototypes. Pushing the limits of new technologies, the EPFL+ECAL Lab advocates a human-centered approach to develop unprecedented and meaningful applications.

Working on tangible projects, the EPFL+ECAL Lab collaborates with numerous companies and institutes. It runs European projects, partnerships with major museums, industrial and academic collaborations. All these findings fundamentally influence our use and perception of emerging technologies.

In its educational mission, the EPFL+ECAL Lab has created, co-created, runs and supports various academic programmes and educational courses. Each year, it opens a select number of positions for a two-year curriculum that combines a research project with advanced education: the Master of Advanced Studies in Design Research for Digital Innovation.
